BOOZE:
Our body temperature needs to drop 2-3 degrees in order to fall asleep. Which is why it’s always easier to fall asleep in a room that is too cold vs too hot. Alcohol has a thermogenic effecl and starts to increase your core body temperature which is the exact opposite of what you need for good sleep. As a result you have more sleep fragmentation and it also tends to affect your REM sleep. Alcohol also inhibits vasopressin, so anyone who drinks knows you tend to pee more. This is the pro-diuretic affect of booze which can also affect waking throughout the night!
CAFFEINE:
Caffeine has a half life of 6 hours, and a quarter life of 12. The way caffeine works, is that it hijacks adenosine receptors which is what we need to build up in order to create sleepiness at night and it just blocks them. So if you have some caffeine at midday, a quarter of that caffeine is in your brain at midnight. For those who don't think afternoon caffeine doesn't effect their sleep, studies have shown a 20% reduction in deep sleep in these individuals as a consequence. In context this will age you 20-30 years as a result. We know that people have different enzymes that break down caffeine in our systems
THC:
THC is a pro-sleep compound no matter what the strain, and acute usage will help to decrease the amount of time it takes to fall asleep. However, it’s been shown to decrease REM sleep like alcohol. As far as those chronic THC users you lose the benefit of being able to fall asleep faster because you’ve built up a tolerance and now you need even more to fall asleep.
CBD:
CBD studies are hard to do due to funding based on the ethical side. CBD looks promising but there isn’t enough data as of yet. It does help you fall asleep faster and it doesn’t seem to effect REM sleep. Keep checking on this one as more science starts to show us how it really affects our sleep!
Many of these strategies are used in order to help us fall asleep quicker or stay more alert during the day, but at what cost. I think most people lack the knowledge and default to playing the I didn't know card. The effects of these small choices made daily can have serious aging effects as well as rob the quality of our sleep nightly!
