February 12, 2021 a cold air mass came down from the north in the form of "Winter Storm Uri". It was all fun and games and very pretty until they cut the power. It only got down to 47ºf in my room at its coldest. The main issue wasn't the heat or lack of electricity for light and cooking. It was not having damn WIFI!!! luckily cell service wasn't interrupted.
Many people suffered major damage to their homes when their water pipes busted because they froze. Without electricity to provide heat through out the house to keep the pipes above freezing at least the people might have faired better for such a seemingly benign natural event that only lasted for a few days.
The Bamboo was rated to at least 17ºf according to the literature that came with the mail ordered plants. This is not the first winter to have killed off my Bamboo but last years winter was very mild and was no problem for my plants. Every grow season they put up new shoots that grow to seemingly a predetermined height. Once reached they just branch and leaf out but do not grow in height or girth any more. The next grow season the Old Hamii will put up at least three to four new shoots that will be approximately twice the size as their predecessors. that is actually exciting news because soon if not this grow season, they will be big enough to make some cups and water vessels that Ive been wanting to make for six years. Thats the whole reason I planted them in the first place.
As you can see in the video the damage the freezing rain and air did to even the thickest culms that I have. I believe the fibrous vessels burst from the expanding freezing water it was carrying to lead to the ultimate death of all the culms that have made it this far. But like I said Im hoping that this seasons shoots will be plentiful and huge!
We'll seeeee...
