Theists that call in really should stay away from talking about slavery. It's a real tough position to defend. BTW, Talk Heathen had a super-astounding call from a Charles from Canada who said things like how the slavery was inevitable so God made rules so that slavery can be as "humane" as possible. The hosts almost snapped their necks multiple times because of double takes at the outrageous things the caller said.

@StultusVenator I honestly need to put that long story online somewhere. I was a missionary - lived in 5 countries with my wife & kids. I went out to convert all these bad people. The more people I encountered in myriad cultures, the less I was convinced they were basically bad. I was trying hard to change their minds with my mythology and they quite casually changed me with their human decency. To answer your question, it was a slow accumulation of cognitive dissonance and watching reality chipping away at my theology. Eventually defending my religion (to myself) just became unmanageable. I gradually eased out, changed from fundamentalist to evangelical to Christian to struggling with my faith to agnostic to Atheist and now call myself secular humanist. I love the clarity and freedom of reality. Ironically, some of my old catch phrases feel more real than ever - i.e. "once I was blind but now I see!", "A heavy burden has been lifted!", "the truth shall make you free." As Hitch (peace be upon him) said "Take the risk of thinking for yourself; much more happiness, truth, beauty and wisdom will come to you that way." He was right.

_"...you need to educate yourself on how a Christian is supposed to act when they're trying to argue their point."_ By what interpretation of what verses and why those and can anyone else know or care how a christian is "supposed" to act if we're throwing secular reason out the window to ask them to act in some kind of "christian way"? You see, you can't really ask that of people, not as a theist or as an atheist. Its unreasonable to ask people to interpret things they base their beliefs on in a different way from what they're doing. If you're going to imply that a certain interpretation is wrong and another is better, you have nothing more than your interpretations based on wishful thinking to base that on and anyone else's wishful thinking is equally as valid to dismiss yours and say that killing gay people is necessary and good. This is the whole problem with basing beliefs on interpretation and wishful thinking: everything is suddenly equally valid and it's just a case of he said she said. Several verses say to pray in silence where no one can see you, others say to spread the word, and others show it's okay to kill everyone who disbelieves your version or your god and doctrines. So which are the ones to act on, when, and why? You can't show that any better than a theist can. It's all up to what a person wants and if that's an acceptable method, everything goes.

@@homerj.simpson7562 Except people who are calling are most of the time just people who want to hear their voice "in TV" and are not really interested in hearing others' opinion. And Matt is inviting such callers, to his own frustration. Just look at "one minute to present your case" rule. And provocative "call us and convince us the God exists". As if he really expected some "God" to suddenly reveal himself in scientifically rigorous fashion. I get that this specialisation is somewhat intentional as hosts always advertise those other "deconvertion" shows like "Talk Heathen" and Matt and others maybe don't want to have callers overlap, I just find this show to be much less interesting to listen to nowadays. And as antitheist myself, if I was theist, fundamental one like many callers seem to be, I would find Matt's not empathetic approach only strengthening my resolve to keep staying brainwashed. He does not show empathy to victim of brainwashing at all, he just seems to be interested in pointing out logical fallacies, which he obviously heard thousand times.

He was never baptized. My parents did go on from time to time but I lived in a different area a long way from them I still have guilt pangs totally irrational but it's always in the back of my my mind Both sons are 30 and 27 respectively and weren't raised in any religion?

I get that infant baptism is the norm in many cases and expected in some, so people treat like a natural thing. It's just ceremony for everyone else besides the child. Most of the time it isn't going to hurt anything, and it's really that community coercing it that is the harmful part, but when you start poming holes in it, it shows itself as nonsense. Personally, I am surprised more groups don't encourage adult baptism. It may still be manipulative, but at least the average adult has the capacity to make a choice about it.
