The Forest Haven Asylum, originally named "The District Training School for the Mentally Retarded," was opened in 1925 and operated all the way up until 1991. Located in Laurel, Maryland, the facility served the entire Washington, D.C., area. And the level of patient abuse and neglect here would ultimately rise to a level that motivated Congress itself to pass a law pertaining to it and prompted the Federal court system to order the facility closed altogether back in 1978. But it didn't close...not for another very long 13 years. And what ended up happening here, and especially considering who it ended up happening to, just might be one of the darkest stories that we've explored and shared here on A Tourist in the Land of Reason.
