I think Kareem’s goat case is having the greatest basketball career. Like not just NBA but his entire basketball journey. If I remember correctly he was undefeated in high school and in college. He won 3 straight rings in college and the only reason he didn’t win 4 was because they didn’t let freshmen play with Varsity. Then banned the dunk because of him. And then came into the NBA competing with Wilt right off the bat. And then went on to win 6 MVPs and 6 rings to go with it. I think it’s the entirety of his career. He’s a winner.

Lebron is the only player that gets praised for how many times he went to a girls house. Kareem was the all time scorer, was still great at 38, won 6 chips, went to the finals 8 times and was not considered the GOAT in favor of Jordan. Longevity stat wise certainly says something but not a lot if you arent winning like Kareem dominating as a 38 year old winning a chip. Especially since Lebron doesnt just lead in points, but also most turnovers and missed shots in the playoffs and finals, but only with Lebron nobody brings this up, but when Kobe has the record in the regular season or Malone, Dirk and Kareem following with Lebron close by, then its an argument. Also it's virtually only ex-teammates, young fans and media members calling him the GOAT, nor better than Kobe. Even his banana boat boys one of them he won two chips with, none of them claim him to be the GOAT or better than Kobe either. They all played each other and with each other they KNOW whats up. Only KD of that Olympics squad has spoken out and he calls Kobe 1B to MJ. So honestly who cares what a minority group of mostly highlights watching untalented youngins think. If defense wasn't as much if not more skill based than offense then tell me why so many god damn players can average 20+ but the "best defenders" in the league are constantly getting dropped off, can anybody in the league truly LOCKDOWN any player with a good offense skillset consistently? If you can name any you still cannot possibly argue that there aren't more great scorers than there are great defenders. Even the way the two sides of the ball are discussed implies defense takes skill, "the effort plays" whereas you hear so often that "offense is effortless for him" you don't hear anybody say a player has had effortless defense. If something takes more effort to be good at than the other, then when a player is good at the other thing that should be counted as a skill. You can not try and shot chuck but still make the shot but if you just don't try to defend you are going to get scored on, because the likelihood of hitting a bullshit shot is MUCH higher than a professional NBA player or hell even some dude at the YMCA missing an uncontested layup because you didn't try on defense. As somebody who plays basketball defending is much harder than scoring because when you're on offense you are in control of what happens, you know what you are going to do but the defender does not. Defense has a lot more guessing involved and therefore is fundamentally harder to do. So yes, defense is a skill just as much (if not more) as offense is and it should be broken down as well, rim protection is different from on ball defense which is different from off ball defense and so on, blocks and steals are separate categories for a reason.

Trying to push defensive lowlights from some midseason games to argue Kobe is mid defensively is a weak move. Especially when most of those clips are young Kobe aka team on his back Kobe. When you are the entire offense, it can be tiring and you might take some defensive plays off. Same shit happened with harden and he is forever labeled as an ass defender by every casual. You won’t find any defensive lowlight clips of Kobe in the playoffs. Idk why some people can’t differentiate intensity levels of game 51 of the season and game 6 in the playoffs

Kobe is not a better 3 point shooter than Bron. Kobe was an ass 3 point shooter. What is this revisionist history. Bron also is a better scorer People confuse better mid range vs better scorer lol. Bron scored more points than Kobe on what? 2000 less shots lol. There’s no world Kobe is a better scorer than Bron 😂 Just bc Kobe made some tough shots (on bad efficiency btw) doesn’t mean he’a a better scorer. If we really wanna talk about it, Kobe not even top 3 scorerers the league has ever seen. In no order: KD, MJ, Harden (prime), LeBron, Wilt, and if ppl of this generation keep cooking like this, Kobe won’t even be remembered as top 10 with ppl like Giannis, Embiid, Luka, Booker, etc.. Mustard said it best. Casuals like this simply value the aesthetic of scoring and not the action and production.
