The two owlets, being estimated at less than two weeks old, still must be protected under mom owl nearly all the time in cases of bad weather. Only Monday was the most ideal day this week for the young ones to start exploring within the nest a bit more. These videos cover time periods during the past Sunday-Tuesday morning and yesterday morning (Mar 31 - Apr 2 & Apr 4)
The last video in this compilation was recorded during the last significant rain storm of the week yesterday. One owlet had just popped out but very quickly realized that back under mom was the place to be. Otherwise the 45 minutes I spent watching them in the rain yesterday meant watching mom owl just sit there keeping the kids warm and dry. (Also, it may not seem like it, but I promise that it's much more difficult to keep a camera steady when trying to hold an umbrella upright! ☔😄)
With better weather forecast over the next week we're hopeful that the young ones will be more active and growing fast. Stay tuned for more cute and interesting owl videos!
Owl Names:
********
As more people stop on the trail by the 'owl tree', more talking about them happens when there is no owl activity to see. Earlier this week all that talking turned to names for the owls and the following were unofficially officially adopted (Special thanks to L & Z for their leadership with this important task 😁):
Mom: Mathilda (or Tilda)
Dad: Ricardo (but sometimes if he's being goofy, Ricky)
Owlet #1: Clementine
Owlet #2: Petunia
(Although once they get bigger it might be difficult telling which owlet is the older one. Any owl experts know what to look for after a few weeks or a month to identify separate GHO individuals within a brood?)
