On the younger side of the discussion here at 34, and I look back on some of those situations and realise, flat out, that there were a couple of times I had the right to press charges and certain teachers in my school let people get away with a lot simply to put up this front that the bullying wasn't as bad as it was. "People need to learn to stick up for themselves" doesn't really work in a situation where you're pinned to the ground by somebody who has half again your body weight who decides if I don't eat a handful of dirt his friend will kick me square in the head with no way of protecting myself with my hands. Or being wrestled by somebody I thought was my friend who tried to strip me against my will to compare penis sizes. The real punchline is I was removed from class and set up in the library because this all happened in the classes at the 'highest level of academia' as this girl so eloquently put it, and me being bullied was disrupting everyone else's learning. And the only actual 'help' I got froom school was being put in touch with a therapist who insisted that I should talk to my estranged father more, despite me telling her exactly what kind of man he was.

When I was in year 7, I got bullied by a group of girls in my class. They stopped after an incident where one of them mockingly-asked me if I was okay and I blurted out "my uncle is dying of cancer". Two years later, I was sat next to one of them in English class as part of a seating plan, and she asked the teacher if she could swap seats with someone, and when he asked why, she said she found it uncomfortable sitting next to me because she used to bully me. This interaction happened in front of me. You'd think it would be me who was so uncomfortable that I asked to move since I was the one who was bullied, but no, it was her and her feelings.

I'm a high school teacher, and most kids who are bullied are bullied about things they can't change. So a poor student with a crooked nose is going to recieve some sort of "help" by constantly being told her nose crooked and that she's ugly? She doesn’t have the money to "fix" it, and the truth is, it probably isn't even ugly or noticable to most people. I've seen students called names for something as little as having a big forehead or hair loss, to more major things like their weight, their race, their culture, their last name, their disability. I've sent so many people to the office. _Some_ bullies have bad things happening in their lives, but more often it's the best looking, upper middle class to rich, sports playing, Gucci belt wearing, entitled child who's parents constantly defend their actions in Parent Teacher Conferences. And the mean girls are the worst, they're so hard to catch. They make group chats specifically to make fun of a person, sometimes while being their "friend" to their face, just so they can gather data to use in the group chat to further make fun of the kid. They see how long it'll go before the other kid notices. They catfish, they send anonymous messages, they share s*xual videos to laugh at, they develop code words, they pit true friends against each other in jealousy, and as a teacher -- this pisses me off but is unrelated -- they are so likely to cheat on tests. Other kids cheat on tests, but when confronted they apologize and ask how they can fix it. The mean kids double down. I've been threatened by one, and taken to the office by another. Covert narcissists, probably. And they want to be that "smart" kid, because it's good for their image, but as a very intune teacher, I can tell you now that they lie, cheat and copy so that they can be percieved as smart.

And while she's had a lot of learning experiences in the whopping four years since she graduated, she clearly needs to have several more... Specifically, she needs to learn a little about perspective and empathy. If one of my young high school students said anything in class like this girl is saying in her video, I'd be shutting that down right quick: she's uninformed about the reality of bullying, and instead of trying to learn, she's doubled down by continuing to act like a bully. And I'm far from perfect, myself. I'm not a terribly kind person sometimes, perhaps often, but I'm constantly trying to be mindful and improve. I would recommend she do the same.

The way she downplays the effects of childhood bullying is actually so sickening and frustrating. Considering one of the common reasons for kids getting bullied is them standing out, a lot of neurodivergent kids were these "mean girls" main targets. Bullying can destroy a child and completely ruin their social development and self-confidence. While the bully forgets what happened the next day, the victim can end up being genuinely traumatised by it, ESPECIALLY neurodivergent people. Hell, I'm terrified of teenagers now, all because of what I was subjected to at my school and that is going to take MY time and resources to properly remedy, all because someone wanted to have a laugh at someone else's expense.
