I like a tight weave as you do. I changed things up a bit. When adding a new strip, I take the time to hand sew a 1/2” seam on the ends as I need them, instead of looping them together. In that way, I end up without any knots at all. The back of my rug is the same as the front. It doesn’t take that much time to do, and the results are great!

I knew many people are put off by the threat of having to SEW, so I show twining without sewing so those that fear sewing can twine rugs.

@@iamauntmeem So nice to hear from you! I understand what you’re saying about offering a “no sew” craft. Are you still making rugs?! I’ve made about 6 rugs & 6 placemats, but I had to stop for awhile & add other crafts to my life because my hands can really start hurting. I interchange with wool appliqué, punch needle, & even making fairy houses & items. I just finished a rag rug with fall colors….so, it’s time for a change again. I have 2 large bins of prepared strips, but I keep debating whether to give them away or not. What do you do to prevent your hands & wrists from aching?

Thank you, I'm so glad you succeeded to get it to work. I couldn't find the complete guide to twining. Once my husband and I figured it out I said we have to put this info on KZitem so everyone can do this. It's so great to use up old material and so addicting in a good way. Twine on!

Thank you. Twining is such an easy ans great way to reuse old sheets, jeans, shirts, etc. And it doesn't require a large dedicated area to twine. I keep one or two looms twining looms going all the time. Great for when watching a show or movie and I can't sit still and do one thing at a time. You can easily move them around. If you have any questions let me know.

I just made myself a rag rug (denim) placemat size, following your instructions. I am SO amazed at how well it turned out, considering its the first time I have tried weaving this way. Just wanted to say thanks for the clear instructions, and now I feel I can tackle something bigger! :)

Thank you so very much for your excellent lessons! Hope to meet you someday. I have your loom, but I am trying to figure out some way to raise it, like a rack. For my first rug I am using plastic bags and just weaving, not twining. I wish the loom was taller so I could make longer sleeping mats. This mat will be for a child.

Karen, I just watched the beginning of my third video and it shows going around the left side of the loom to start twining back to the right side. It may, also help to see it from that side as it would be the end of the first row if you start on the right as I do.

I’m starting my first twinning rug. You make it look so effortless! How do you keep the material from fraying? My warp material is very frayed, it was a sheet but not 100% cotton. I also noticed that your weft has a fold in it. What Video of your do I need to watch on no fraying technique? Thank you, Lisa

I fold the strip in three. The center is what shows. I just fold the sides down behind the strip. I do it in most of the videos. I'll have to check which ones I show it in detail.

Yes, I can. If you go to my second video: "Twining a Body of a rag rug in more detail it video 2". It shows how to end a row and turn to start the next row. If you would like to see them I have 5 videos on the subject of twining on a peg loom. If any of them do not answer your question adequately please let me know and I will make a video to answer it. Thank you again.

Have you ever used clothes line or hemp to warp with then used recycled sheets as the weft?
@iamauntmeem
9 жыл бұрын
Julie Craven I have been a rather frugal person and have found ways to use things I have, so I think the clothes line would be great for an durable rug. People have made mats with grocery bags. I make French reusable grocery bags with wool/hemp yarn. The yarn is really great to work with. How thick is your hemp? What are the thickness(s) of your clothes line? Would you use the similar thicknesses in the whole piece? I think anything that is woven and durable would work for twining .Keep in mind the fact that clothes line may not flatten as much as your weft if it's not the same material. My husband wants to try a rug with cord. Let us know how it goes if you try any of your ideas. New ideas are where new ways of doing things come from.

How do you make your strips Do you tear them crosswise or cut them on the bias ?
@iamauntmeem
9 жыл бұрын
Which ever way they rip the easiest. I try to get the longest strip I can to reduce 'knots'. ie I rip denim jeans down the leg of the jean. Some material like microfiber has to be cut with a rotary cutter. Or I just cut them. I use my own judgement. The cloth tells me my options! Thank you for the question. Jan

Hi, I need help starting the warp on a loom using dowel rods, no pegs. I guess it’s called a Salish loom? I cannot figure it out. Can’t find any tutorials at all I’ve tried everything but I need help!! 😩 Do I just take my material, drape over top dowel and bottom rod and tie in a knot? If so, how many warps do I need? 15 or 19?? I thank you in advance for your help!! 😊

when you come back from the left side to going around the corner do you go back thru that loop or do you right to the rod and start back the other way?I can't find the video that shows that step Help please!

+Patty Geldert Hi, Patty, Once you have gone through the loop at the beginning you don't have to do it again with the next row coming back. Just remember most problems can be fixed and try to relax and enjoy twining, it is rewarding in itself with out having the benefit of a handmade item you've made yourself. Jan

Have you ever tried using t-shirt yarn as weft on a twined rug?
@iamauntmeem
8 жыл бұрын
Great idea! I have worked with T shirt material before but not as rug material. I've knit and crocheted with it. I don't see why you couldn't use it on a rug. Depending on the content of the t-shirt some are stretchier than others and you would have to keep that in mind as to how it will alter the appearance of the finished rug. I would make sure all your materials are preshrunk before you twine a rug for the final rug to come out well after it is washed and dried.(You could probably use it for warp also if cut wide enough.) A T-shirt rug would be a great use of the material. Send pictures when it's done. Thank you for your question. . Thank you, Jan

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't have a twining loom yet, but when I get/make one, I will try it. When I do, I think I will stretch the t-shirt yarn so it's consistent. I noticed that in your videos, your weft is not stretchy. I wonder if the stretchiness will affect the rug.
@iamauntmeem
8 жыл бұрын
Stretchiness will affect the final appearance of the rug. In my experience with T-shirt material once cut it can be pulled to a state where it no longer goes back to it's original 'size'. You would have to try this with a piece of your material. The other thing to help prevent shrinking in on the weft is utilizing metal rods on either side of the loom. Once you have the weft completely woven into the warp and you remove the rods they should help keep your rug 'squared'. I can't guarantee it won't change shape or 'hourglass' without actually seeing and feeling the t-shirt material you will be using. Practice working with it and you will get the feel for how it will react when used. Once you get a feel for your materials you will have a kind of "sixth' sense of how it will perform by the feel in your fingers. Just try it out first and experiment with it before you spend time making an entire rug. Maybe make a small item with it first. Thank you for your questions they brought up some great points. Jan

Can this be done with yarn instead of rag?
@iamauntmeem
7 жыл бұрын
hi, Nicholas Kinoshita. Yes, it can be done with just about anything that can be made into long strips. I have used yarn. When warping I use more loops on the pegs to get the same coverage in the item I am making. I twined with regular yarn and roving. This is the beginning of a rug twined with roving and Bernat Blanket yarn. Thank you for your question. Give it a try!
