The big problem is the ATF agent's initial refusal to cooperate made him seem suspicious; even in the case that he was legit, the likelihood of him being armed might actually be higher, and he was already being non-compliant so at that point they weren't going to let him reach for any potentially concealed weapon no matter what. The bigger problem is coming to the conclusion that refusing to comply with orders automatically engenders suspicion; sure, a guilty person is likely not to comply with orders, but that can only be used to make a logical assumption if an innocent person would very rarely take the same course of action. However, being immediately thrown into hostile, stressful situations, with orders being barked at you, sometimes unclear in nature, with a gun pointed towards you, tends to provide unpredictable reactions, which is half the reason why police encounters go so badly so often anyway (the other half of the reason being that the type of people hired to work as police are not generally what the public wants in an officer). ATF guy's pretty dumb, and if I had to choose between being arrested by him or the officer in this case, I'd likely choose the latter, but there was definitely excessive force used and the immediately hostile attitude from the arresting officer made things worse.

These stories sadly does nothing, what needs to happen is to start from scratch. You triple the pay and then actually force police officers to be trained, knowledgeable. Have regular standardized physical and mental tests you need to past twice a year. And maybe one of the most important changes. The recorded footage needs to be just as easily available as court records. If for any reason a camera is turned off, or as we see all to often in this types of footage when cops realize they have messed up and start to try and change their story. Why should people confess to them and make their job easier when they never admit to their own mistakes? Worse they hide behind their "friends" and the law as if cops never lie.

I was already so mad and trying not to cry about how the cops were treating the veteran but when Agent Twelve said that the dog died I started sobbing… my heart goes out to that veteran and R.I.P Sunshine.

Holy crap. Police need better vetting, better training, and no more qualified immunity. If they didn't step over the line, they wouldn't even need qualified immunity in the first place.

Jesus! That man & his dog really upset me. His only sunshine, that song. Don't serve your country cos they'll mess you up, you get PTSD & wind up homeless & on a watch list. RIP Sunshine & I really hope the man is doing OK.

A VA ID is federal not state. So Its valid in EVERY state and territory of America. Also, that dog didnt bite him. THAT pissed me off the most.

How despicable can cops be. To treat a war Veteran with absolutely NO RESPECT. I respect most of the law enforcement and I know they have a very stressful and dangerous job, but that doesn't give them the right to mistreat someone. The military ID is a Federal government issued form of identification and to me that should be more valid than a state issued one. Personally, I didn't see Sunshine bite that liar of a cop at all and I went back and looked at the video many times. Sir I will keep you and Sunshine in my prayers and I pray you will see TRUE JUSTICE in the end. I would be horrified to know that they both are still with the police department. What they did to you and Sunshine was unwarranted. As the old adage goes, KARMA IS A BIT_CH, and as my husbands Grandmother would say YOU NEVER FLY SO HIGH YOU DON'T BUMP YOUR A_S ON THE WAY DOWN. You also reap what you sew. Know that you are in my prayers daily. Much love from this 77 yr. old from Virginia. God bless, stay safe and thank you for your service to our country.

I’ve realized watching these videos, between cops and people getting arrested, there are a lot of people that have anger issues. The cop is the same person as the criminal in these types of situations, they just have different clothes on

I completely disagree with what happened to that ATF agent. The agent was willing to show the first officer his credentials from the second that officer got on the scene, but as usual cops have to be on a power trip. I know it's easy to crap on the ATF agent because he was getting the same treatment that civilians typically get, but that case is a prime example of exactly why policing in the United States is out of control. The cop had a trained weapon on the ATF agent, he could have easily waited for backup and had the agent take his credentials out while both officers were trained on him, this would have avoided all of the extra crap that came later. As a black man who's a war vet with 24 years of service I've had my fair share of runnin's with local PD over the years, but back in the day once they saw my credentials there was a level of respect afterwards, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

So i can just call the police and say somebody is pretending to be an officer and have them police come out guns drawn giod to know literally no evidence to pull guns in somebody but the police are always so scared poor babies

For the record, police are required by law to accept any photo ID whether it's issued by the state or the federal government. They can't refuse to accept an ID just because it's issued by the VA.
