If those two cars were at a show, I'd have way more interest in the '70 Challenger. Just my opinion, but I give much more credit to the 1970 owner for essentially building that car. Granted, it's drivetrain is probably nearly as modern as the 2020 car. I just find it much less cool to buy a fast car "off the rack."

You can maybe plug in an OBD2 scanner and see if you get a signal from the ECU? Otherwise you’ll probably want to check continuity from the plugs to the pins on the ECU connector.

What's the point? It's not vintage muscle against modern muscle. The '70 has a modern drivetrain dropped in it, so it's just modern against modern, with it coming down to weight and aero dynamics producing the difference. Try putting a 1970 426 up against the 2020, and that'd be something worth watching.
@noboltsleftbehind

There’s a lot more to it than that sir. Suspension tech is completely different and new cars have electronic assists and traction control all of which make a huge difference. At the end of the day, horsepower is horsepower, engines are just twisting force.

The old car better win a drag race. The weight advantage is incredible. I have to say it though. Under no circumstances would I ever have swapped in the modern 5.7 engine. I could easily go with that 6 speed though. I would be completely unwilling to lose the old school sound, simplicity and feel of a correct engine for the 1970 era car. Roller cams, modern aluminum heads and stroked displacements, if you're willing to go there, make it such that you lose nothing for power to the new engines. A 450-500HP 12.0 sec Small block performance that is still very street friendly is easy these days and allows you to still retain the original feel and sound of the old car. I cringe when-ever I see modern, ugly, plastic covered engines in these classic rides. It's just not necessary and it kills the car's ability to take me back in time. A few people build the truly crazy HELL CAT conversions and I won't pretend that you could get to these power levels and retain anything close to "street friendly" with an old school small or big block but that's a big step up from what we're seeing in this video.

@noboltsleftbehind

@@gavinharmon8803 I hear ya man, but one thing to understand is these original motors are over 50 years old at this point. They’re worn out, tired, and few and far between (i.e. expensive). Sure, you could buy an old block and have it rebuilt. But have you shopped machine shop prices nowadays? And how many machine shops are still around doing this kind of work, and doing it well? Getting hard to come by too. The reality is if you wanna see these old classics still driven the way they are meant to be, ripping it up at the track, road trips to Vegas, ripping through twisty mountain roads (yes, I do all of these things regularly), a modern motor is really the only option. Oh, and my “modern” motor? 20 years old this year. That said, I fully agree for museum pieces or grandpa with unlimited funds puttering his pristine show car down to the Sunday car meet, old school motors are 100% the way to go 👍
