In this article, we have a great story to tell from a long-time patient who suffered from fibromyalgia for five years. After suffering from chronic muscle pain throughout her body for several years she consulted the medical profession. They diagnosed her with fibromyalgia and prescribed several off-label prescriptions for fibromyalgia. Maryanne says that she suffered from all eighteen painful spots that are described in a fibromyalgia diagnosis. (1) Eventually, she was told that she was going to have to get used to living with the pain and the doctor told her to get her disability papers ready. Mary Anne felt hopeless and as she describes in the embedded video, she went home had a pity party for a few days and then mustered a new resolve to find answers. Thankfully, she found a talented naturopathic doctor who gave her nutrition advice which was enormously helpful. But it wasn’t a resolution. AS a result, she was referred to a chiropractor that adjusted the neck and she had great relief. Mary Anne describes that she did not fully connect the neck adjustment to the relief because she was not put on a program of care for follow up.
Eventually, she found out about upper cervical care and came into our office 10 years ago. After a few months of consistent care, Mary Anne was healed from her fibromyalgia pain. Once again, she was able to garden, hike, and having a normal life. As Mary Anne stated, “Upper Cervical Care saved my life”. In a moment we will discuss what fibromyalgia is and how correcting the upper cervical spine can have a positive impact on fibromyalgia and other chronic health issues.
Fibromyalgia is a pain syndrome whose hallmark is 18 tender points at different areas of the body. The main symptom of fibromyalgia is pain and tenderness in muscles and joints throughout your body. The pain can shift from place to place, but to meet the criteria for fibromyalgia diagnosis you’ll need to have experienced pain for at least three months. The pain must be in a specific number of body parts and be above a specific severity score. Also, there must be no other inflammatory diagnosis conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Fibromyalgia can also cause a number of other symptoms, such as:
fatigue
lack of energy
trouble sleeping
depression or anxiety
memory problems and trouble concentrating
headaches
muscle twitches or cramps
numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
itching, burning, and other skin problems
What Does the Upper Cervical Spine Have to do With Fibromyalgia?
It has been our experience in our office that the very large majority of patients that suffer from fibromyalgia have experienced a whiplash-type trauma prior to its onset. The upper cervical spine has a global effect on postural muscle tone. When there the joint capsule, which surrounds each joint in the neck, is torn from an injury, it causes the joint to lose normal motion, increases spinal muscle tone, and can lead to a cascade of musculoskeletal tonicity problems throughout the spine.
Some studies have shown that 80 percent of fibromyalgia patients was brought on by an injury where 20 percent was brought ton by an infection. (2) It is not surprising that injury is one of the precipitating factors in the onset of fibromyalgia, considering that the spine houses the central nervous system and is the seat of control for all body function. It is our opinion that injury, especially to the upper cervical spine, is paramount to the development of fibromyalgia. The brain stem is the seat of control for most autonomic functions of the body including muscle tone regulation. Because the head weighs 10-12 pounds and sits on the atlas (c-1), weighing 2 ounces, this region of the spine is most susceptible to injury. The upper neck should be one thing that is examined by a qualified upper cervical chiropractor.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignment's in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography(Cbct) are used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored overtime to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
