In this article, we will discuss a patient's case named, Marisa, who came to our office 6 months ago because she was suffering from severe debilitating chronic leg pain. Marisa's chronic leg pain was affecting everything in her life. The leg pain started following a 5 k race. Marisa thought in a few days it would go away, but it didn't. In fact, the pain got so bad that Marisa, bring a teacher, was unable to even walk from classroom to classroom. She had to stop and give her leg a rest before she could walk further. As she states in her video testimony, embedded in this article, she was unable to walk more than several hundred steps without resting. Obviously this is NOT normal. The pain was affecting every aspect of her life and she was desperate to find answers.
A friend of Marisa's, who is a patient of ours, referred her to our office. After a couple of weeks, she started improving. She was not regular with care and started physical therapy around the same time. She wasn't really sure which procedure was helping. However, Marisa started to notice when she was corrected she improved. She also noticed when the pain returned she was out of alignment and finally put two and two together that the upper neck corrections were at the root of her problem. She then decided to be more regular with care and in a few more weeks her pain resolved. Obviously, this made Marisa ecstatic. She was able to return to dancing and be social again. She explains that not only did her leg pain go away but she also noticed that her confidence and outlook on life changed. When we feel better it is common for our confidence and outlook on life to become rosier. As a consequence of her newfound health, Marisa, is now happy to say she found a new boyfriend and gives credit to Blair upper cervical care!
How Can The Neck Affect Leg Pain?
Almost all of the muscles throughout the spine are regulated in the brainstem. The brainstem is an extension of the bottom part of the brain that houses most of the autonomic functions of the body including postural muscle tone.
Because the anatomy of the neck is precarious, it is the most susceptible area of the spine to become injured. The head weighs 10-12 pounds, sits on a two-ounce bone, called the atlas, that is only held together by muscles and ligaments. The head also sits on top of the neck which makes it vulnerable to acceleration-deceleration injuries such as, whiplash, sports injuries and other types of blunt trauma.
When the neck misaligns from its normal position it causes micro-tears to the joint capsule ( strong ligament that surrounds the joint), damages the soft tissue and results in imbalances in spinal muscle tone. Over time a cascade of postural adaptations occur due to the neck misalignment and its effects on the brain stem and central nervous system. These postural imbalances can lead to an array of musculoskeletal skeletal symptoms that include low back pain, leg pain, neck pain, and headaches.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored overtime to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can often affect vertigo and aid your body in healing itself.
