Full video on my KZitem! I also give an overview of the steps in the Spike Approach for you to apply into finding your approach.
Remember to do the approach away from the net toward the direction you want to approach from (generally outside the court). Mark off where you want to take off from at the net and work backward! You can do the same for any position you're hitting from, just change the approach steps/direction to match the distance you usually get. I usually count the steps off the pass because its a good idea to use those steps as momentum. But the number of steps you take depends on the athlete and situation. Every athlete is different, and every approach situation is different. This is just an easy way to mark your starting point and give you a way to isolate your court/spacial awareness and practice the spike approach within the "usual" distance you get. If you're new to this, take your time and accumulate quality reps, and you can continue building on top of this with timing and other spiking drills in different situations. In BFV we build into airborne spiking drills and into different scenarios like out-of-system delay hitting and 2 step approaches.
Eventually, knowing where you need to start your approach from off the pass and where you are becomes more automatic, explosive, and fluid!
