Nobody other than Broderick Crawford could play the role of Dan Matthews as he did! Many comment how much of a drunkard and glutton he was, but he sure delivered the goods! I saw these shows in the mid 1950s when I was in grade school, and we kids just adored this policeman! I'm an elderly woman now, and I STILL adore him and the shows!

They fire dozens of bullets, and not a window is broken, not a passerby is touched... a miracle of that time. THANKS. I love this series, this is the second time I watch it. In addition to the stories which are often excellent (complete a police investigation in 25 minutes is not within the reach of all screenwriters and all directors, even if there are obviously some implausible details or some too easy shortcuts); so in addition to the plot, there are the sets, these small American towns, the charming houses in the suburbs, the often pretty and admirably dressed women, there is Broderick Crawford, huge, large enough to carry the episode on his broad shoulders, the beautiful blue eyes of Sergeant Ken Williams (William Boyett)... But above all, if I dare say, there are these admirable American cars of the 1950s. They are truly artistic masterpieces of the 20th century, like here, the Chevrolet Impala 4-door hardtop '59... What a marvel ! Sorry for them, but forget Picasso, Andy Warhol, and many other artists, the real art was in the designer offices of GM, Ford, and Chrysler!

Yes, nice "classic" cars. But, they were huge, heavy, loud, stinky and no power brakes or power steering. Look good, that's all. You can find and purchase fixed up ones and sit it in in your garage, if you really like them so much, so then you can enjoy without paying to run the gas guzzler and have your neighbors complain about the noise and gasoline stink.

@Phuque2 , Not only were the Chryslers, Dodges and Desotos available with Hemi and Poly-Spherical engines, but they had GENUINE HEMIspherical combustion chambers, unlike the FAKE 'hemi' engines that Chrysler is schlepping these days... Maybe not the same power that the third generation FAKE 'hemi' engines currently have, but what those first and second generation GENUINE 'HEMI' engines Did have was decent durability & reliability... The Third generation FAKE 'hemi' engines have become expensive, unecessarily-overcomplicated, unreliable pieces of JUNK... CARS like these older ones on this classic T.V. show, Retain and often accelerate their original values. This is unlike the newer cars, that become so difficult to keep running, and rapidly loose their value because of ridiculously complex / low quality designs...

Oh this is too much fun! I think I found the location of the shootout. Taking your tip that it was filmed in Northridge CA on Reseda Blvd, I flew above on Google Earth looking for a building with a rounded corner opposite a building with an overhang out to the street. Both buildings have stonework columns. The building with the overhang has a planter in front of the window. The getaway car was on Rayden facing east. The round corner building is easy to spot at the intersection of Reseda and Rayden. Get down on street level in Google Earth and compare the storefronts to those in the episode!

I'm 95% sure that at 5:16 the bad guys are southbound on Vanalden at Kinzie. The Kinzie sign is clearly visible and matches up well with Google Street View. The phone booth in the orange grove is one block south at the corner of Vanalden and Marilla.

I love watching these old episodes even though they faked a lot of the communications equipment. This episode at 36:00 the dispatcher is on the phone, the microphone is real, but cannot be plugged into either Motorola intercoms mounted in the console. Those are not 2 way radios to the patrol cars! If you look close, the right dial is in reality an old analog digital clock. I haven't seen all the episodes yet, but some of the cars have trailer hitch ball mounts used for the filming crews. I still love watching these classic episodes.

I keep wondering how Dan can hear the other side while he still has the button depressed on the microphone. That never worked for me.

In the opening shootout scene, as many shots as Mathews and Williams missed at the bad guys, it is amazing that none of the plate glass windows behind the bad guys was damaged. 😄

The initial gunfight was ridiculous! Just standing in the street shooting, without cover. Also none of the traffic stops. They do not tell you what the shootout was about. The poor guy dies after getting shot in the leg.

Wow! Did you see the "mobile" phone Matthews was holding? Monstrosity. Boy, he'd be wow'd at the phones today. Why was Williams out of uniform as Matthew told him at the end?

Yes, it's even worse on the Westerns. All 6 shooters could fire almost unlimited rounds of ammo. Lol 😆.

How do the bad guys know the phone number to the phone booth? And Ken not in uniform haha! William Boyett did 25 years as a police officer actor. He should get a pension.
