#jointPain #painKillers
This is a fantastic story about our patient Kim Cook who suffered from decades of chronic joint pain resulting from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. She had taken so many pain killers over the years that she developed a stomach ulcer. Eventually, she was put on Plaquenil which was better for the GI tract. Kim was resigned to a life of medication because she had no other hope of getting better. Thankfully, she found Blair upper cervical care through an add we ran in an alternative health magazine that is distributed throughout the Los Angeles basin. Interestingly, she was compelled to bring her son in for care, not herself. Kim never considered that her condition could improve because she had run the gamut of mainstream and alternative health care with little hope for a solution.
As Kim explains in the video, her son suffered from chronic severe depression for several years and she was apprehensive about long term medication and decided to give upper cervical a shot. Within a few months, there were marked changes in her sons' emotional state and within 6 months he was his normal self again. She then referred her husband to our office who suffered from low back pain and sciatica. His response was rapid and as a consequence, she inquired about her rheumatoid Arthritis and whether or not we could help. After a conversation, Kim decided to give upper cervical care a shot.
As she describes in the video she had several joint surgeries, was on a lifetime of medications, and had a shoe lift due to the imbalance in her pelvis. Within a few short months, Kim was off all medication, got rid of her heel lift, and was living pain-free. After many months she started to jog for the first time in her entire life. While Blair upper cervical care is NOT a cure-all it often is successful in restoring enough functional capacity to the body that it can often heal from a variety of health conditions.
How Can Upper Cervical Care Help people with Rheumatoid Arthritis?
To many, the idea that a correction to the spine could help rheumatoid arthritis patients seems far fetched. But once you realize how the body works it becomes more plausible and even makes perfect sense.
The brain, brain stem, spinal cord, and spinal nerves are at the seat of control for all functions in the body. Every single cell in the body is controlled by a nerve message. Since the central nervous system controls ALL functions in the body any interference to it can cause problems anywhere in the system.
The head weighs 10-12 pounds and rests on a two-ounce bone in the neck called the atlas. Furthermore, the headrests on the neck which acts as a fulcrum and makes the head-neck junction vulnerable to injury. When an injury occurs, the soft tissue, ligaments, and tendons tear and the joint misaligned from its normal range of motion. In response, the muscles lockdown in a protective mode, and there is a loss of normal joint motion which can have far-reaching aberrant effects on the central nervous system. When joints in the neck lose motion the nerve endings on the joints surface can alter normal input into the cord affecting the physiology throughout the body.
In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune inflammatory condition, the immune system is not functioning normally. A new discipline called neuroimmunology was born a decade ago when researchers came to the conclusion that the immune system did not run independently of other body systems but is directly controlled by the central nervous system. (1) It could be that upper cervical spine misalignment causes irritation to the nervous system which then downstream causes the immune system to function abnormally leading to autoimmunity. Regardless, it has been our clinical observation that autoimmune diseases often respond favorably to upper cervical correction as is the case with kim in the embedded video.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
