EMI has been a patient for only 6 weeks and already has a pretty incredible healing story. The joy of practicing the Blair Upper Cervical procedure is being able to do something that is minimal invasive that can produce major life changes through natural healing. Email suffers from life long allergies. Every morning she would wake up with a runny nose that would take several Kleenex to empty. Also, allergic rhinitis (runny nose) was an all-day issue. She also suffered from severe gastrointestinal problems. The main issue was when she had the urge to have a Bowel movement she would only have a thirty-second window to find a bathroom..... or else. Imagine being in your teens and early twenties and you have to plan your entire day around being worried about your inability to hold in a Bowel movement. Not a fun way to go through your high school years!
Thankfully a friend of Emis found an add we ran in a local publication called the whole person calendar. Emis friend tried for several years to get her to our office. But like most people in the public, the Blair Upper Cervical procedure seems fringe. Skepticism is one thing that often keeps people from investigating a healing procedure that seems off the beaten path. Finally, EMI decided to come in for the consultation. Interestingly she did not start care until a year later. Unfortunately, most people who end up in our office tend to exhaust all other options first. We have named our office " the last-ditch doctor ". Most of the time the first place the patient should have been in our office. And in emails case, this was one hundred percent the case. After 6 weeks of cate, her severe urgency to have a Bowel movement has disappeared. She also no longer suffers from chronic sinus drainage and overall upper cervical care has truly changed her life. She no longer has to premeditate her day around bathrooms and safe places because of her Bowel issues.
How can the upper cervical spine influence the gastrointestinal tract?
The brainstem is part of the nervous system that sits at the base of the skull and extends down into to first cervical vertebrae at the top of the neck. The brainstem has many nuclei that control various functions in the body. The brainstem is responsible for autonomic control of peristalsis ( the rhythmic contraction that occurs when swallowing and occurs through the go tract).
" Central Mechanism of Peristalsis-Cortical and Brain Stem Control. Deglutition is a reflex mediated through the brain stem, even though, both volition swallow and pharyngeal (reflexive) swallow are associated with activation of several cortical areas." (1) Without getting too technical, the brainstem controls most functions in the body and controls Bowel urgency. Any structural misalignment at the base of the skull can have detrimental effects to the normal functioning of the brainstem. As a consequence, it is fairly common for patients in our office to come in for care with many different health conditions that are often related to upper cervical spinal misalignment.
Allergies and their connection the upper cervical spine
Allergies are due to an abnormal immune response. People who have allergies have a hyperactive immune response. When pollen, pet dander or other offending substances cause an allergic response it is due to an immune system that overreacts to a non-threatening substance. Over a decade ago there was a landmark seismic shift that occurred in the scientific world. Up until that point, it was believed that the immune system had its own brain and ran independently of the central nervous system. It is now no longer in dispute the immune system is regulated by the central nervous system through an array of physiological mechanisms. (2)
In short, if the upper cervical spine is misaligned and interfering with brainstem function it is plausible that the immune system can be affected and lead to allergic rhinitis. In our Los Angeles based upper cervical health care offices we have seen hundreds of allergy patients either resolve or improve with upper cervical correction.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
