i always see some artists using ugly de saturated browns for darker skin tones and it kill me a little lmao, they also tend to shade with straight black and that kills me too. this was a good tutorial!

Great video! I see way too many artists struggling with darker skin tones, maybe they should watch this. You did an excellent job explaining the color transitions. As a brown skinned girl myself, this makes my heart so happy! I also enjoy your other videos, you go the extra mile to really explain how to do things :)

bless u for this, artists really need to learn to draw dark skin instead of whitewashing with the excuse that they dont know how, well here you have it y'all!! get on learning

Sunny D okay that's true but if people didn't blindly and wrongly scream racism ( I'm looking at you "feminists") then we would learn how to, some artists have an inherent fear of portraying pocs incorrectly that we will be slandered and called racist for it at least that's how I feel, but I'm making characters with a lot more darker skin tones now because I'm like "eh fuck it it doesn't hurt to try does it" XP

Damn, that sista is fine...as...SHIT! The character came out sooooooo dope for an Anime styled character. There are things with light and lips that we as black people subconciously apprecieate as a standard of beauty, and this character captured a lot of those things extremely well. Next stop, natural hair. I've learned a whole lot about lighting, and will be taking up this technique for character building! Thank you!

He does record them for certain videos where he focuses on the sketching. He didn't in this one as he's focusing on the painting bit, and the video was long as it is.

I'm guessing the black girl is the only character you have named after her skin color in relation to the _chocolate_ variant of coffee..
@MondayMorningMist
7 жыл бұрын
Her name is spelled "Moka," which has a different meaning than "mocha" as in the drink. I think the name was intended to match the name of one of his other characters, Mika: knkl.deviantart.com/art/Maid-of-Metal-Mika-and-Moka-641385925 Most likely he didn't name Moka after her skin color

Or maybe you're the one who is being mildly problematic for noticing that Moka sounds like Mocha and for then deciding she was named that for her skin tone? What if he just likes the name Moka? If he chose to make her Asian just so it would be PC to have a character with a name sounding like 'mocha', how would that be more okay? He'd still be deciding on her name based only on the colour of her skin. Besides, I think she is actually a lot darker than Mocha. If she was named Coco, I'd totally agree with you but mocha more of a warm, lighter colour so I doubt her skin tone is related to the sound of her name. I'm not trying to be a poop. If it turns out he is being problematic, I'm not cool with that either. However, the fact that he is aware of the fact that darker skin tones aren't normally represented in colouring tutorials and has chosen to fill that need suggests to me that he isn't out to cause trouble for anyone.

@Peteru69

Complain? It's an observation. He might not even be aware of it. Funny how the subconscious mind tend to work. I don't think I'm "problematic" for pointing it out either. Like a white girl wearing a native american headdress for some sepia hipster photo, it's not cute and it's not "accepting of their culture". I can see how you'd think that I was only out to start shit if I was actually white. I also don't care for being overly sensitive. I'm not forcing my personal views down his throat, just pointing out that it's a very ironic name for a black girl, and a maid at that. Take it however you want.

Considering that a lot of art programs give students $100,000 in debt for jobs that might have a starting salary of $30,000 I disagree. College can hurt artists in the long term financially especially if they are paying out of pocket. There are so many great little online programs that are much cheaper and of course it is never too early to self study and try to get out there even without a degree. College is not a safe bet. You don't know who is going to be your teacher. If you pursue an art mentorship you can learn from people you actually admire. If you do go to school please research the school heavily. Find out if the students are working and how much it actually helped them.
