The species Nymphaea caerulea is the aquatic plant portrayed in the mythology of Ancient Egypt and popularly called blue lotus, Egyptian lotus, sacred blue lotus and blue water lily. This plant lives rooted at the bottom of shallow water environments, remaining with floating leaves. The flower is beautiful with a light blue hue and has a wonderful scent.
The Egyptian blue lotus has psychoactive properties with a stimulating, sedative and sleep effect, but in high doses they cause adverse effects.
In ancient Egyptian mythology, the blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) is portrayed as being smelled and in ritual offerings to the gods of mythology. The blue lotus flower is also depicted in funeral rites of kings and priests, as well as in many art objects found in tombs, as the plant was believed to be sacred and possess magical powers linked to rebirth in the afterlife. The blue lotus symbolizes creation, rebirth and renewal.
