In this article, we will discuss our patient Nan's upper cervical chiropractic story. Nan was in a bad car accident at age eleven, where her femur had s compound fracture and unknowingly to her at the time suffered a whiplash neck injury that would affect her for the coming decades.
Following her car accident, nan felt like her spine was "off-kilter" and she suffered from chronic right-sided neck pain. Nan explains in her testimony video embedded in this article that she started to have episodes where her neck would completely lock up where she could not turn her head and was in excruciating pain. As a result of her severe neck pain, she started looking for options to fix it. She stumbled upon our office and after getting under care her neck pain and loss of range of motion cleared out. Nan also explains that the upper cervical procedure was gentle. Her prior chiropractic experiences were not positive because the aggressiveness of the corrections did not do well with her body. She was delighted to find a procedure that was gentle, precise, and effective.
Nan has continued with Blair Upper Cervical care to maintain the health gains she recurved from regular care. Thankfully most of the chronic problems she presented to the office have cleared and she continues care to stay healthy. Next, we will discuss how whiplash-type injuries can lead to postural imbalance and chronic neck pain and other common musculoskeletal complaints.
Whiplash Trauma, Neck Pain, and Spinal Misalignment
Whiplash trauma can accelerate the head forwards and then backward, damaging the soft tissue and ligaments which surround the joints of the neck. These types of trauma lead to misalignment of the cervical joints, which leads to imbalances in spinal muscle tone throughout the spine. It is common for people who suffer whiplash-type trauma to suffer from chronic neck, mid-back, and low back complaints.
Because the head weighs 10-12 pounds and sits on the atlas, weighing two ounces, the head-neck junction is susceptible to spinal injury. It is estimated that 4 in 1000 people suffer whiplash trauma in any given year. (1) this is equivalent to 1.3 million whiplash-type injuries a year in the United States. Unfortunately, many people who suffer whiplash trauma end up on pain killers and never get to the proper health professional that can correct u settling instabilities that result.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can often help remove the underlying cause of many who suffer from chronic sinus problems by supporting your body in healing itself.
